What we do

Three ways to trade with us

Every card that passes through the shop is photographed, condition-checked, and priced against live market comps — whether we're selling it to you or for you.

Buy

Shop singles & slabs

Pokémon, Magic, and sports singles plus PSA/CGC graded cards — real photos of the exact card, honest condition grades (NM/LP/MP), and prices set from current comps, not wishful thinking.

Sell

Sell us your collection

Ship it or drop it off in Modesto. Within 48 hours you get an itemized offer — every card listed with the comp we used, so you can see exactly how we got to the number.

  • No lowballing, no "bulk rate" surprises
  • Take the whole offer or just part of it
  • Paid same day you accept
Consign

Let us sell it for you

Keep ownership, skip the work. We scan, identify, photograph, price, and list your cards across eBay, TCGplayer, Shopify, Square, and Whatnot — then pay out monthly with a full ledger.

How consignment works

From shoebox to sold, in four steps

The engine under the hood is a scan-to-listing pipeline that identifies about a thousand cards an hour — so your collection gets to market in days, not months.

  1. Send your cards

Ship insured or drop off locally. Everything is logged the day it arrives, and you get a receipt listing every item we took in.

  2. We scan & identify

High-speed scanning plus AI identification names every card, set, number, and variant. You get a digital manifest of your whole collection to review.

  3. You approve the prices

Each card is priced from live comps with sensible rules — floors on low-value cards, tighter margins on big hits. Nothing lists until you sign off.

  4. Listed, sold, paid

Cards go live on up to five marketplaces with duplicate-combining and inventory sync. You get a monthly payout and a ledger showing every sale and fee.

About Drew

Built by a collector who builds systems for a living

  • In the hobby, for realI rip packs on live streams, chase hits, and sell singles — I know what a binder full of childhood cards means.
  • Systems are my day jobI build websites, automation, and AI pipelines for small businesses across California's Central Valley.
  • Local & reachableModesto, CA. One person, one phone number, no support-ticket black hole.

Hi, I'm Drew. The California Trading Company exists because I live on both sides of this problem.

As a collector and live-rip seller, I've felt the grind firsthand: a great collection sitting in a closet because photographing, identifying, pricing, and listing a thousand cards by hand takes months of nights and weekends. Most people either give up, or take a bulk lowball offer from someone counting on them giving up.

As a systems builder, I've spent years wiring up the exact machinery this problem needs — scanning pipelines, AI identification, market-price data, marketplace integrations, automation that turns a shoebox into live listings in days. That's not a pitch deck idea; it's the same kind of automation I build and run for business clients every week.

What makes this shop different isn't just the engine — it's who it's for. The trading card community gave me livestream nights, trade friendships, and the thrill of the pull. CTC is my way of building infrastructure for that community: fair offers with the comps shown, listings that don't misgrade, and a real person in the Central Valley who picks up the phone.

The community pledge: comps shown with every offer, no lowballing the binder you grew up with, local trade nights as we grow, and your local game shop is a partner — not a target.

FAQ

Straight answers

What games and cards do you take?

Pokémon (English and Japanese), Magic: The Gathering, and the major sports issues (baseball, basketball, football, hockey). Graded slabs from PSA and CGC are welcome — cert numbers are verified on intake. Other TCGs case-by-case: ask.

How do you decide prices and offers?

Live market comps — recent actual sales, not sticker prices. When we make you a buy offer, the comp for each card is listed right on the offer sheet. Consignment prices follow the same data plus rules you approve (price floors, rounding, margins by value band).

When and how do I get paid?

Buy offers: same day you accept, by whatever method suits you. Consignment: monthly payouts with an itemized ledger — every sale, the marketplace it sold on, fees, commission, and your net.

What do the condition grades mean?

We use the standard scale — NM (near mint), LP (lightly played), MP (moderately played), HP (heavily played) — applied conservatively. If we're unsure, we grade down, photograph the flaw, and disclose it in the listing. That's why returns stay rare.

Is my collection safe with you?

Everything is logged with a receipt the day it arrives, stored in sleeves and boxes (climate-safe, not a garage), and covered by insurance while in our care. Vault-plan collections get dedicated insured storage. You can pull your cards back anytime.

Where are you located?

Modesto, California — serving the Central Valley in person and everyone else by insured mail. Local drop-offs by appointment.
